FFO: Panic! At The Disco, Slowdive, Massive Attack

I know what you’re thinking: that’s an odd mixture of artists in the header. However, some artists can’t be easily slotted into a pigeonhole and usually, they’re the most exciting acts. That’s just the case for Saint Mars, a collective of established musicians, each bringing their own influences to the table.

The band comprise Marc Darcange (Masterlast)Angelo Bruschini (Massive Attack)Jason X (ex-Transposer) and latest recruit Tryzdin Grubbs. Tryzdin shot to fame at the age of 11 years old, when a Youtube video of him singing Adele’s Hello went stratospheric, accumulating nearly 3.4 million views so far (not including many more millions across international media).

Together, the roll call of musicians produce a hybrid of alternative rock, shoegaze, emo and er- ‘French Baroque’. Darcange’s French-Swiss background explains the latter influence, while the dark-hued soundscapes account for the rock references, and the lyrical concepts nod towards the likes of early emo.

Their forthcoming concept album is centred on the true story of one 13 year-old boy’s tragic experience as a result of sustained bullying. Tryzdin was hand-chosen by Saint Mars leader, Marc Darcange, to give authenticity to the tracks on the album sung by the protagonist, little realising that Tryzdin himself has suffered significantly as a result of
bullying. ‘Somewhere Somebody‘ is a powerful, intoxicating experience, with a video to be released on the same day as the single which emphasises the impact bullying can have on peoples’ lives.
